Please be aware that each award has a separate registration form. Please note all entrants must be over 18.
Are you a stand up? Musical comedian? Sketch group? Improviser? Character act? Clown? Cabaret performer? Whatever genre your comedy style, we want to see you perform!
Whether you’re established, up-and-coming or a complete newbie, the Stage Award is looking for the best new comedy act and our prize package will offer career development and industry support.
WHO CAN ENTER?
The Stage Award is open to all new acts with no or under five years of agency representation.
HOW DO I ENTER?
To enter this year’s Stage Award complete the registration form and submit a 5-minute YouTube video of one single continuous performance, i.e. your set (see below). An edit comprising of more than one performance is not permitted. This does not need to be a professional standard video. Funny Women’s panel of industry judges will only watch 5 MINUTES of your recorded performance, so please, only submit the 5 minutes you want us to watch!
WHAT IS YOUR SET AND HOW LONG IS IT?
Your set should be 5 minutes of your best comedy material. It will always be 5 minutes and you can use the same material throughout the whole competition. In fact, if you are selected to go through to one of our heats, we will really want to see how you perform this material to a live audience. Make sure to time your set beforehand – although we won’t pull you off stage with a comical hook (health and safety conscious, obvs), you will be disqualified if you go more than a minute over the 5-minute mark.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT AND HOW IS IT JUDGED?
If you are successful and selected from your video submission, we will be in contact to offer you a date to perform in one our live heats during May and June. Please check the list below and ensure that you will be available for the heat in the region nearest to your residential address.
Each live heat will be judged by a panel from Funny Women and comedy industry professionals in your region. Audiences will also be asked to judge the acts and their marks will help us decide who to put through to the next stage. No winners will be announced on the night.
Regional finals take place in July and August (dates to be announced) and the grand final will be held in London during late September. A stellar line-up of industry professionals including top agents, commissioning editors and producers from leading broadcasters and the live circuit will be looking for the next future comedy star. You will be judged on your material, stage presence, delivery and originality.

We’re looking for female or female identifying script writers with a real flair for comedy narrative and the ability to put together a laugh-out-loud joke on paper. Joint entries are more than welcome. The award focuses on new voices, meaning you are not eligible to enter if you are or have been employed as a writer on a regular basis or given a paid commission for one or more TV or Radio episodes or Films.
Your script must be an original piece of work of which you are the author/s. Please do not submit work that has previously been broadcast on television or radio. If in doubt, drop us an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
• Send us your 1-2 page treatment, and 10 consecutive pages from one episode of a comedy script for television or radio. Do not send us your full script – we will only ask for this if you reach the Shortlist stage.
• Scripts and Treatments must be submitted in English and scripts presented in standard TV or Radio format. There is a wealth of excellent (and free!) script writing software online. Refer to the BBC Writers Room for guidance on format. Please send your treatment and script as a single PDF – again there are many free packages online that will convert documents into pdfs.
• Scripts are judged for their concept, tone, characters, plot, structure, dialogue, humour and overall marketability.
• A panel of professional readers will select a long-list of 25 scripts which will be submitted to a panel of industry judges for the final short-list.
• Due to the high number of entries, we are only able to offer feedback to those who make the short-list.
• There is no ‘right’ way of writing a Treatment, however we would recommend you consider including a logline, short synopsis, outline of the series, character breakdowns and 3-6 episode summaries as used by BAFTA-Rocliffe.
• One entry per person or writing partnership. If you write in a partnership you may also submit a solo script.
The deadline for registration for the Comedy Writing Award is the 31st of July.
If you still have questions about the Comedy Writing Award please email email@example.com.

HOW IS IT JUDGED?
Films are judged for production, concept, delivery/performance, creativity, writing and overall funniness.
